This call aims to compile a special issue of the journal ‘Saúde em Debate’ titled ‘A Stronger SUS for Brazilians: Pathways to Quality Comprehensive Care, Strategic Management, and Addressing Climate Challenges in Health’, edited by the Brazilian Center for Health Studies (CEBES) in partnership with the Brazilian Agency for Support to SUS Management (AgSUS). The publication focuses on gathering studies that foster reflection and debate on strengthening the Unified Health System (SUS), with an emphasis on comprehensive care, health innovation, professional training and workforce deployment, equity, and strategic management. The issue also aims to stimulate debate and disseminate evidence regarding the impacts of climate change on public health, as well as strategies for adaptation, sustainability, and the strengthening of health care networks across diverse territories and populations.
CONTEXT
As a public policy essential to guaranteeing the right to health in Brazil, the SUS faces increasingly complex challenges related to expanding access, improving the quality of care, reducing health inequalities, strengthening public management, and addressing the impacts of climate change on territories and populations. In this context, the thematic panel ‘A Stronger SUS for Brazilians: Pathways to Quality Comprehensive Care, Strategic Management, and Addressing Climate Issues in Health’ aims to foster a space for dialogue, the exchange of experiences, knowledge production, and the dissemination of innovative practices developed across the various contexts of the SUS (Brazil’s Unified Health System).
The initiative seeks to bring together researchers, managers, health workers, residents, students, and institutions committed to strengthening the public health system. It highlights successful experiences, innovative strategies, and critical reflections aimed at consolidating a SUS that is more equitable, effective, sustainable, and socially committed.
The call for papers invites submissions that address contemporary challenges in Brazilian public health, particularly those related to professional training and workforce distribution, technological and care-related innovation, comprehensive and intercultural care, climate emergencies, and strategic health management.
THEMATIC AREAS
Articles must fall within one of the following thematic areas:
- Professional supply, retention, and training to reduce inequalities within the SUS
- Technological innovation and effective practices in health care
- Comprehensive and intercultural care for vulnerable populations
- Climate change, vulnerabilities, and SUS resilience
- Strategic management, innovation, and the strengthening of public health policies
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
This thematic issue welcomes original articles resulting from research or the analysis of experiences. Authors may include faculty members, students, health workers, and representatives from social movements or NGOs, among others. Submissions accepted include original articles, essays, reviews, opinion pieces, and experience reports, written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish.
A maximum of two articles per author will be published, with only one listing the author as the lead author. There are no submission or publication fees for approved manuscripts. Articles that are approved but not included in the special issue may be published in regular issues of the journal.

When filling out the manuscript submission form, please specify in the ‘Pre-evaluation discussion/Comments for the editor’ field that the article is being submitted for the special issue titled ‘A Stronger SUS for Brazilians: Pathways to Quality Comprehensive Care, Strategic Management, and Addressing Climate Change in Health’, and indicate the relevant thematic area.
